Icelandic Elopement Photoshoot Locations – The Waterfalls

+ bonus: the famous plane wreck

If you’re on a quest to find your perfect Icelandic elopement scenario, chances are you’ve seen some of these locations already… You may even have a particular one on your mind, calling for you, that you already know you want to visit. It may even be… near a waterfall. After all, there are almost 10 thousand (!) of them on this island.

Each of them is beautiful and majestic. So, let me be your guide and show you around some stunning Southern waterfalls. Fair warning: choose any of these for your wedding photos and you will get wet!

PS: In the series, I’ve already written about:

elopement locations in Vik;
elopement locations in Reykjavik;
– elopement locations in South of Iceland;
– idea vs reality of the Black Beach and Blue Lagoon;
– idea vs reality of glaciers, Northern Lights, waterfalls and ice caves.

As always, when you’re in doubt or want me to recommend something specific – let me know and I’ll do my best to help you.

Gluggafoss Waterfall (also called Merkjárfoss)

When you think of a waterfall, the expectation is to see water cascading from up above, glistening in the sun. While this is true, something you don’t expect to see are… windows. Naturally made windows, might I add. Gluggafoss is unique in its way, as the water disappears behind rock formations, only to come out of the rocks to create stunning views and arches. This location is also accessible from above, so if you’d like to see it – hiking is a must.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Remarkable, impressive, astonishing, breathtaking – these are just some of the words you can use to describe the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. One of the most popular travel destinations. Most known for its proximity to the coastline. The waterfall itself is surrounded by green fields, contrasting with the snow-white splashing water. In the Summer it is possible to walk around and underneath it, though the path is slippery and can be crowded.

Did you know that this location was featured in one of Justin Bieber’s videos?

Kvernufoss Waterfall

This location is more secluded and hidden from the plain sight, unlike two precious waterfalls I showed you above. Kvernufoss Waterfall is perfect for couples who love to be in touch with nature and themselves, contemplating and quietly enjoying each other’s company.

This location is hidden behind a hill, so hiking is inevitable to enjoy the sights. Beautiful Icelandic waterfall and not-so-populated by tourists.

Gljúfrafoss Waterfall

One of very few Icelandic waterfalls where you can almost touch the falling water, being so close to it. Out of respect for the forces of nature and your own safety – just let me be clear – it’s not recommended to do so. But, the feeling is there.

When you walk into a canyon that hides this gem, you enter a small mist-covered cave… you and many, many others. This is because Gljúfrafoss Waterfall is something of a beauty, appreciated by many. If you feel comfortable posing with spectators, the location is perfect for you.

Plane Wreck

So now, as a bonus, The Big Kahuna of Icelandic photoshoot locations: the famous plane wreck. Let me quote the words of Iceland Magazine here:

The plane wreck on Sólheimasandur glacial outwash plain in South Iceland has featured in countless traveler photos, a Bollywood movie, several TV commercials and music videos, perhaps most famously in a 2007 Sigur Rós documentary, and more recently in the video for Justin Bieber’s I’ll Show You. The scenery and otherworldly composition of black sand and weathered gray hulk of the plane draw thousands of visitors every year.

Who wouldn’t want to see this mysterious yet alluring location? It requires a 4km hike, accessible from a parking lot. Fairly easy in the Summer, but requires more safety-focused approach in the Winter.

No matter which breathtaking Icelandic location steals your heart – I am here to help you. Let’s talk about your vision for a perfect wedding in Iceland. I will do my best to give you a set of amazing pictures to remember one of the best days of your lives.
